long haul...is it a journey too far?

Dont be put off by the prospect of a long haul journey. holidaywithbaby gives its top 5 tips on how to survive long haul with kids, plus a few places to go:

1. Be prepared. Sounds like boring common sense, but the better planned you are the easier your trip will be. Start planning early- visa, immunisations and passports are the easy things to sort out. Get your packing list organised see HWB comprehensive packing list for what not to forget.

2. Airlines are much better geared for families nowadays, and in-flight entertainment will certainly keep older children busy, it’s still worth packing an activity bag with things to keep toddlers entertained. Items such as a small tub of play dough, fat colour pencils and paper, a car, a few blocks, a couple of interactive books, with mirrors and flaps and two finger puppets (so that one can talk to the other) will help time pass. Try your best to make these activities last by giving them out slowly. Gift wrapping them will delight you toddler, and help entertain them for a few minutes longer.

3. For long haul flights, opt for a night flight, as this should make the flight relatively hassle free as the kids should sleep for a good part of it. However, if your taking a baby who is not a good sleeper, you could spend the night entertaining your little one and end up at your destination exhausted. If you think this might be the case, go for a day flight but be armed with activities to help pass the time. You could also consider a night stopover for flights longer than 8 hours . Although this adds to your journey time, a night stopover may be a welcomed break, allowing you to arrive at your destination feeling human.

4. If you’re think about the far-east or Austrailia- we recommend Singapore Airlines. They are one of the most child friendly airlines about. Their staff are specially trained to soothe and carry infants, change nappies and sterilise bottles. You can also reserve cots and the bulk head seats when you book rather than having to take a chance at getting one at check in, which most other airlines insist on.

5. Keep smiling. No matter what, you’ll need a sense of humour! You may have planned your timings perfectly so that your baby will feed when you take off (to help with pressure balance in the ears), but the flight is now delayed by an hour; your best-laid plans can come undone as you encounter the typical delays of global travel. Stay relaxed as the kids will pick up on any tension and possibly add to it!

Good places to go...

  Trunki suitcase winner!

Leonie Benton from London won this trunki suitcase and aims to entertain her son on their travel expeditions. Her comment chosen at random was :
"Switzerland is also a very good place to go for a child-friendly holiday. People are friendly and it is not as expensive as you might think - we went self catering and had a rental car - petrol was cheaper than in the Uk. The airport at Zurich also has a marvellous kid's play/changing/sleeping/feeding facility - if only all airports were this good!"
